about

The music on this album, Reminiscence, is like a suite with five movements on solo acoustic guitar. The pieces were written between 1994 and 2003, when I strove to create my own magic from what I'd heard on the albums of so-called fingerstyle guitarists such as Alex de Grassi and Michael Hedges. Hedges was the absolute hero of my teenage years. The sounds he managed to produce from just one acoustic guitar during the 1980's were both unprecedented and awe-inspiring. Many people couldn't believe his solo albums Breakfast in the Field and Aerial Boundaries were almost entirely recorded without overdubs.

This album kicks off with a rather virtuoso prelude and then continues with the title track, a work inspired by memories of my childhood. (While composing this piece, I could almost hear children's voices in a schoolyard.) “The Peasant Wedding” is a lively Irish jig and depicts festivities and dancing of an earlier time. “Avond in Schaddeberge” is a Dutch title meaning “Evening in (the village of) Schaddeberge.” A friend of mine tried unsuccessfully to find Schaddeberge on Google Maps, until I told him it was the made-up village name in a children's story I was writing. The suite closes with “Finale,” a rhythmic piece with strumming and percussive effects. It expresses a range of feelings I experienced when departing the United States for the Netherlands in 1989, from the sadness of permanently leaving behind good friends, to the hope and excitement of the prospect of a new life in Europe.

The recording of this album had rather humble beginnings. In the summer of 2003, I rented two professional microphones and a mixing console for a weekend, and recorded these pieces in my living room onto a minidisc recorder. It was not until 2014 that I actually edited the pieces and added some equalization, compression and reverb. The subsequent mastering was done by Henry Smithson, from the UK, and the cover design by Willemien Haagsma from the Netherlands.
